Ever since the introduction of Emotional Intelligence by Daniel Goleman, EQ was imported to China and so far has been gradually accepted by the Chinese culture and has been stamped with more and more Chinese characteristics.
Currently, a large number of Chinese enterprises utilize ‘EQ’ in many aspects from recruitment to the corporate culture building. With the development of the Chinese economy, Chinese enterprises pay more and more attention to human resource. And the HRM systems are improved. ‘EQ’ or sometimes its substitute ‘competency’ (which actually comprises some of the items EQ consists of) or ‘dimension’is widely used in the following categories:
1. Selection and Recruitment:
In Campus Recruitment, afraid of the instability of the fresh graduates, a large number of enterprises want to choose the ones with high EQ beside a nice IQ. Some of them start to use competency model, which can help to select the ones with needed EQ. What’s more, this criterion is also used in the recruitment and selection of other staff to the maximum profit return.
2. Training
Professional managers gradually make their appearance in the Chinese managerial level. But to some extent they are not really qualified, and are still lack of special competencies like team work, creativeness and so on. Training services are now providing such kind of training to the managers in the form of seminar or in-house training.
3. Corporate Culture Building
An interesting phenomenon in China is that after the SARS epidemic, people begin to call for enterprise ‘EQ’, deeming it an effective measure to fight back against disasters. Some of the companies even name ‘EQ’ culture as their corporate culture.

4. Professional Assessment Service
Nowadays in China, either in on-line assessment, in paper based assessment or in face-to-face assessment and interviews, some of the assessing professionals are labeling their products ‘EQ’ test. There are still some of the Assessment Service agencies, under the name of competency or dimension, are testing the EQ. The imported testing methods are well adjusted to cater for the Chinese taste.
